Why your Claude feels dumb
It's not the model. You're using the same Claude that runs entire businesses.
Out of the box, Claude knows nothing about you, can't touch your tools, and forgets everything the second you close the chat. Every step below kills one of those problems. Do them in order. Each one makes the next one stronger.
Connect your tools
Connectors plug Claude into the tools you already live in. Gmail. Google Calendar. Drive. Notion. Without them, Claude is a smart stranger. With them, it knows your business.
The exact setup:
- Fastest way: click the + buttonat the bottom left of the chat box. You'll see the list of connectors.
- Click Gmail→ a Google sign-in window pops up → log in → click Allow. Done.
- Repeat for Google Calendar and Drive. Those three cover 80% of daily work.
- Manage or disconnect anytime under Settings → Connectors.
Test it with this prompt:
Claude scans your inbox and gives you a summary with citations that jump to the actual email.
Know the guardrails:Claude reads your email and drafts replies, but it can't hit send. You always click send. It CAN create and move calendar events. Drive is read and search.
Pro tip:the more organized your stuff, the sharper Claude gets. A Gmail label like "Finance" or "Clients" turns a fuzzy request into a precise one.
Power move once it's connected:
That's Calendar + Gmail + Drive in one prompt.
Create one reusable skill
A skill is a saved playbook. Under the hood it's literally a text file with your instructions. Claude follows it to the letter, every run, across Chat, Cowork, and Claude Code. No re-explaining.
I run skills for carousels, scripts, and client emails. Each one works exactly how I trained it.
The exact setup:
- In the sidebar, click Customize → Skills. (You don't need a paid plan for this.)
- Click + → Create skill → Create with Claude.
- Claude interviews you: what should the skill do, what does good output look like. Answer in plain English.
- Give it a real example of input and output. This is what locks in "your way"instead of "AI's way."
- Toggle it on, open a new chat, and test it with a real task.
What to build first:the task you repeat most. Email replies in your tone. Proposals in your format. Weekly report summaries. If you're typing the same prompt twice, you're doing AI backwards.
Set up a scheduled task
This is where Claude starts working without you. Scheduled tasks run on Anthropic's servers, on a timer. Laptop closed, computer asleep, doesn't matter. It still runs.
Mine fires every morning: revenue, new followers, flagged emails with replies already drafted. I wake up and it's done.
The exact setup:
- Click Scheduled in the left sidebar, then New task → Create with Claude.
- Tell it what you want. It asks a few multiple-choice questions, then shows you the name, schedule, and job before anything runs. Click Schedule to confirm.
- Cadence options: hourly, daily, weekdays, weekly, or on demand. Pick your time.
- Needs a paid plan (Pro and up).
Your first one should be a morning brief:
Pro tip:run the task once manually first. Check the output. THEN schedule it. Because you did Step 1, it's pulling your real calendar and real inbox, not making things up.
Add a plugin
A plugin is a pre-built toolkit. Skills, connectors, and commands for one kind of work, bundled and installed together. Anthropic ships official ones for the most common jobs: productivity, sales, marketing, finance, HR, design.
The exact setup:
- Open the plugin directory in Claude and browse the official plugins.
- Pick ONE that matches what you do every week. Not five. One.
- Install takes a couple of clicks. You'll get new slash commands like
/productivity:plan-dayor/sales:draft-outreach. Type the slash, run the workflow.
Which one:content creators grab marketing. Service businesses grab sales. If you handle your own books, finance. One plugin you actually use beats 50 you don't. Master it, then add more.
Build an artifact
The payoff. Tell Claude to build you a tool and it appears in a panel next to your chat. Working, clickable, yours. Calculators. Trackers. Dashboards. Then you publish it with a link anyone can open. No Claude account needed on their end.
The exact setup:
- Make sure it's on: Settings → Capabilities → Artifacts.
- Say the magic words. Try this one:
- It shows up in the side panel, live. Click it. Use it.
- Want changes? Just say them. "Make the buttons bigger." "Add a reset button." Claude keeps version history so you can roll back.
- Click Publish, copy the link, send it to your team or clients.
I've built client dashboards this way in minutes. No developer invoice. You don't need a developer. You need a sentence.
The whole system in one afternoon
Under an hour of actual clicking. Miss even two of these and you're using 10% of Claude. Do all five and you've got an employee that costs less than lunch.
