Why setup is the whole game
Cowork feels mid for most people because they skipped the setup. Out of the box, Claude is a genius with amnesia. It doesn't know your name, your business, your audience, or how blunt you want it to be. Every chat starts from zero.
The fix is two things: Global Instructions (rules that apply to every chat) and a project with personal files (the deep context). Set both once. Never re-explain yourself again.
Set your Global Instructions
This is the rulebook Claude reads before every single conversation. Here's the path:
- Open the Claude desktop app
- Click Cowork
- Go to Settings
- Click the Cowork tab
- Find Global Instructions, click Edit
- Paste the template below, swap the brackets for your info, save
Don't overthink it. Fill in what you know, save, and refine over your first week as you notice Claude doing things you wish it wouldn't.
Create a project and run the setup prompt
Global Instructions are the rules. This next part is the deep context. You're going to have Claude interview you and build 4 files it keeps forever.
- Click Create a new project
- Choose Start from scratch
- Name it something (your name or your business works)
- Select the location, click Create
- Paste the prompt below and answer the questions
It asks you a handful of questions in short rounds. Answer in shorthand, say "skip" or "you decide" anytime. When it's done, it writes 4 files.
The 4 files you just built
Together with your Global Instructions, Claude now knows everything it needs about you, your business, and how to work with you. That's the difference between an assistant that feels generic and one that feels like it actually gets you.
Connect your tools
Once your files are set, take it one step further. This is what separates the people playing with Cowork from the people running their whole day on it.
- Click Customize
- Click Connectors
- Click Browse Connectors
- Connect the tools you use every day (Gmail, Calendar, Notion, Drive, Slack, whatever you live in)
Now Claude isn't just smart about you. It can actually do thingsinside your tools. That's the top 1% of Cowork users.
A few rules so this actually sticks
- Keep memory.md current. When something changes, just tell Claude to add it.
- Be honest in brand-voice.md. Paste real samples of your writing. That's what makes the voice land.
- Redo Step 1 anytime your goals shift. It's a living rulebook, not a tattoo.
